Pet Poop on your Carpets

No matter how well-trained your dogs and cats are, accidents happen.

Even if your pets always do the right thing in the right place (in the yard), you or your kids can step in it and track it all over your floors, rugs, and carpets.

You know that pet poop stains on your carpet are embarrassing — they stink, they look bad, and they can even pose a health risk.

So, we feel it's always best to be prepared for such an event.

How to Remove Pet Poop from Carpeting

If it’s solid, you don’t have too much to worry about.

But if it’s runny, or tracked in on shoes — that's the problem.

You can basically use the same methods below if the poop is a bit more runny, but just work faster as more of the poop will work it’s way down into the carpet.

1. Gather the following pet poop first-aid kit materials:

(Hopefully you've prepared for such an emergency in advance!)

• Dish Soap**
• Spray Bottle
• Dishwashing Gloves
• Spoon, Old Spatula, (or some type of scraper)
• Spotless White Towel or Rag (paper or cloth)
• Small Plastic Trash Bags

** Dish Soap: A clear, non-bleach liquid dishwashing detergent such as Dawn, Joy, or Clear Ivory is recommended. Do not use detergents that are cloudy or creamy, because they may leave a sticky residue.

I like to be prepared, so I have a little dish soap ready to go in a small vessel where I can add water and put it in a spray bottle at the moment I need it.

2. Make the Dish Soap Solution

Use about 1/4 teaspoon of dish soap to 4 cups of warm water.

3. Step by Step Tasks

1. Put on your gloves.
2. Use your scraping tool to remove as much of the material as possible from the areas, and put it in the plastic bag. (Be sure to work from the outer edge inward to avoid spreading the substance any further.)
3. Grab your white towels and wet it slightly with cool water.
4. Blot — don't scrub — the stained area with the white towels until there is no more transfer of the stain onto the towels.
5. Use the dish soap solution in the spray bottle to spray lightly onto the spot, and then blot repeatedly with white towels — working from the outer edge inward toward the center of the spot to avoid spreading. Do not use too much dish soap solution, because the residue will attract dust and soil.
6. Rinse thoroughly by spraying with clean water, then blot dry with a dry towel.
